Hi everyone, For my day job, I teach 16-19 year old students who have learning difficulties/disabilities. I'm teaching on a course based on music appreciation, which will allow them an opportunity to listen to and learn about different styles of music and express their feelings when listening to them. Two areas that I'd like some assistance with (on or off list, depending on how much you think it'll interest others), if anyone could help: 1) I'm starting off with a lesson exploring the concept of music, what it is etc (in necessarily basic terms). I'm hoping to challenge some ideas about what music is. Last time I did this, I played the students Autechre's "Gantz_Graf" which caused amusement and bemusement, but provoked some good conversation. Has anyone any suggestions about anything else that challenges convention about rhythm, pitch, melody etc.? It has to be something I can get fairly readily. I was thinking maybe Stockhausen, but I'm no expert on his works. 2) I'm doing another class on how music can be used to create a particular mood or atmosphere. I've plenty of ambient stuff to use (Brian Eno, Harold Budd), some darker, "eerie" stuff (Coil, Labradford), and some more whimsical/happy stuff (Satie). Can anyone suggest tracks that are fairly readily available that obviously create a particular mood? It has to be easily describable as many of the students have no or very limited verbal skills. Any help with this would be gratefully received.
